Lose weight during the holidays? Crazy right? Not at all.
As I sit here typing, I am staring at cookies, cake, and that ohhhh so delicious pie. I gained around five pounds last holiday season. I’d love to say those pounds were some kind of lean muscle from a crazy workout regimen. Alas, this would be a lie. I cookied my way to an expanding waistline last year and I am determined to turn the tide this year.
Here is my plan:
- I will eat only when I am hungry. Eat small meals before turkey or ham. Don’t starve yourself in anticipation
- Bring healthy snacks to holiday parties. Veggies and fruit are your friend. Plus, you look thoughtful…win win.
- Use the smallest plate available. I usually like to grab the tray-sized plate. No more! Small plates lead to smaller meals and a smaller waist.
- Keep your veggies free of cheese and marshmallows. Sad to say it, sweet potatoes probably aren’t your friend.
- Ask questions between bites of food. Take time to speak to every member of your family or friend group. The longer the meal lasts, your temptation to rush for seconds will diminish.
- Drink water. Period. Beer, eggnog, soft drinks…enemy of holiday health.
- Drink even more water. Water. Water. Water.
Keep your celebrations limited to parties and family gatherings. Try moving after breakfast and lunch. Walk a mile with your family after opening presents. Play with your puppies. If you have snow, get outside and burn some calories.
Finally, sign up for the gym before Christmas. Avoid the New Years rush and get a routine down before the resolution crowd shows up. You’re already two weeks ahead everyone else. If you need a good workout routine, check out my holiday hulk workout!
